Project Overview
Spring Creek Recreation Reserve is an oval that hosts local and district level AFL and cricket. The council identified a poor surface that is difficult to manage and does not meet standard regarding soil profile or grass species. Furthermore water from the nearby creek flows into the oval during high tide, thus damaging the playing field.
To achieve a result that would meet specification, and drainage requirements was crucial in selecting the correct sand for the job.
Challenges
There were several challenges the team faced when planning and undertaking this project, including:
- Specifications The specifications for the oval stated that the sand must conform to the SPORTENG rootzone level sand standards, with a particular focus on the drainage criteria as the oval is situated next to a creek which flooded the previous oval.
- Volume Moving over 6,900 tonnes of sand is no easy feat. Ensuring that deliveries arrived on time, ready for the Victorian Sports Group team to use was a major component of the job.
Ensuring the right product was selected, with timely and efficient delivery within the specified timeframe was a critical challenge.
Solutions
The experience team at Daisy’s Garden Supplies were well equipped to handle the challenges:
- Specifications The Daisy’s team proposed the Turf Sand from our quarry in Colac for use on this oval. Our material is tested in NATA accredited labs and is found to meet the requirements of SPORTENG rootzone level sand, enabling it to be used on this oval. Furthermore, the drainage rates of the Turf Sand were assessed as suitable for handling with the creek flooding the oval may experience.
- Volume With almost 7,000 tonnes of sand to move, our transport team arranged our own fleet of trucks to complete deliveries on a timeline of 7 days. Furthermore to supplement the Daisy’s fleet, the transport team managed trucks from sub-contractors to ensure that the sand was delivered on time, and ready for the VSG team to use.
Outcome
The project was delivered successfully within a tightly managed construction window, with 6,900 tonnes of turf sand supplied across almost 200 individual deliveries over a seven day period. Careful coordination between Victorian Sports Group, and Daisy’s Garden Supplies ensured uninterrupted supply and consistent product quality throughout the program.
The reliable execution of deliveries allowed construction works to progress without delay, supporting accurate placement and profile construction across the oval. As a result, the surface was established on schedule and positioned for successful turf establishment, ensuring the oval will be ready for handover to the Surf Coast Shire for use ahead of the 2026 AFL season.
